Physically, Gold Tiger's Eye is a member of the quartz family with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Its distinctive golden-brown bands and silky chatoyancy — the luminous, shifting "cat's eye" effect — are caused by parallel fibres of crocidolite replaced by quartz and iron oxide during formation. It is generally water safe for brief cleansing.
